Originally called the New Tower, the Water Tower stands at the end of a crenellated retaining wall in an area now known as Tower Gardens. The spur wall connects the Water Tower to Bonewaldesthorne Tower, located at the northwest angle of the main walls. The lower area where the Water Tower stands was once covered by the River Dee before the river silted up and receded. The Water Tower was built in 1322 by the mason John de Helpeston for the sum of 100 pounds and remains largely unchanged today. The Water Tower's purpose was to guard Chester's port. Now that the river has receded, the "Tower Gardens" area is a pleasant place to relax in fine weather. There is a children's playground and a bowling alley at the Water Tower. Step back in time (for free!) at Chester's beautifully laid-out Roman Gardens, which lie between the old city walls and the River Dee. None of the fragments of Roman history on display in the gardens actually came from this site - they were found at the Roman legionary fortress of Deva within the city walls. It's an astonishing collection, including fragments from some of the most important military buildings, including the main baths and the legionary headquarters.

The Old Dee Bridge is Chester's oldest bridge. A bridge was first built in this site by the Romans, and the bridge that stands today is largely the result of a major rebuilding in 1387. It is a designated Grade I listed building and a scheduled monument.

This Grade I listed red sandstone tower probably dates back to the 13th century, although it has been added to and renovated over the years, including in the 17th century when the plaque engraved with a phoenix was added by the Guild of Painters & Stationers, to whom it was then leased.

Roman era bridge and the oldest in Chester. It can be busy with walkers on the weekends so take it easy when crossing. The surface on either side of the bridge is cobbled, but perfectly ridable on a road bike.
