7月 21, 2025, Chester Water Tower
Originally called the New Tower, the Water Tower stands at the end of a crenellated retaining wall in an area now known as Tower Gardens. The spur wall connects the Water Tower to Bonewaldesthorne Tower, located at the northwest angle of the main walls. The lower area where the Water Tower stands was once covered by the River Dee before the river silted up and receded. The Water Tower was built in 1322 by the mason John de Helpeston for the sum of 100 pounds and remains largely unchanged today. The Water Tower's purpose was to guard Chester's port. Now that the river has receded, the "Tower Gardens" area is a pleasant place to relax in fine weather. There is a children's playground and a bowling alley at the Water Tower. 7月 21, 2025, Morgan's Mount
Morgan's Mount is a tower on the north side of Chester's city walls that served as a lookout platform during the English Civil War. It is the first tower along the walls west of the North Gate. It takes its name from a gun battery located outside the present walls, commanded by Captain Edward Morgan during the Civil War. Source: http://www.discoverchester.co.uk/

7月 21, 2025, King Charles Tower (Phoenix Tower)
The Phoenix Tower was originally a medieval watchtower. Built in the 13th century, it stands at the northeast corner of the historic city walls. After falling into disrepair, it was rebuilt in 1613 by two guilds, and their emblem, the phoenix, was placed above the door. Its connection to King Charles dates back to 1645, when he supposedly stood in the tower and watched his army being defeated at the Battle of Rowton Moor. Over the years, the tower was used commercially before being converted into a museum.

Plenty of different places around Chester to stop and rest by the Dee whilst on a cycle ride or walk. Alongside the Groves area there's plenty of choices for refreshments and toilets

The Old Dee Bridge in Chester, Cheshire, England is the oldest bridge in the city. It crosses the River Dee and carries the road leading to Handbridge from the end of Lower Bridge Street and the Bridgegate. A bridge on this site was first built in Roman times, and the current bridge is largely the result of a major reconstruction in 1387. It is listed on the National Heritage List for England as a Category I listed building, and is a scheduled monument. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Dee_Bridge)

If you do the tour around the city walls, you will pass the River Dee. From here you have this panoramic view of the Old Dee Bridge. In front of us we could see cranes, seagulls and other birds. A quiet, great atmosphere right on the River Dee.

9月 18, 2023, Eastgate Clock Tower
The original gate was guarded by a wooden tower, which was replaced in the 2nd century by a stone tower, which in turn was probably replaced in the 14th century. The current gate dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure supporting the walkway which forms part of Chester's city walls. In 1899, a clock was added to the top of the gate to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee two years earlier. It is supported by pierced iron pillars, has a clock face on all four sides and a copper dome. The clock was designed by Chester architect John Douglas. The entire structure, gate and clock, was designated as a Category I listed building on 28 July 1955. (Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastgate,_Chester)

12月 29, 2022, Chester Roman Gardens
Step back in time (for free!) at Chester's beautifully laid-out Roman Gardens, which lie between the old city walls and the River Dee. None of the fragments of Roman history on display in the gardens actually came from this site - they were found at the Roman legionary fortress of Deva within the city walls. It's an astonishing collection, including fragments from some of the most important military buildings, including the main baths and the legionary headquarters.

This Grade I listed red sandstone tower probably dates back to the 13th century, although it has been added to and renovated over the years, including in the 17th century when the plaque engraved with a phoenix was added by the Guild of Painters & Stationers, to whom it was then leased.

Roman era bridge and the oldest in Chester. It can be busy with walkers on the weekends so take it easy when crossing. The surface on either side of the bridge is cobbled, but perfectly ridable on a road bike.
