Eastgate is a permanently open gate through the city walls of Chester on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix in Chester, Cheshire, England. The original gate was guarded by a wooden tower, which was replaced in the 2nd century by a stone tower, which in turn was probably replaced in the 14th century. The current gate dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure supporting the walkway which forms part of Chester's city walls. In 1899, a clock was added to the top of the gate to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee two years earlier. It is supported by pierced iron pillars, has a clock face on all four sides and a copper dome. The clock was designed by Chester architect John Douglas. Eastgate clock is one of Chester’s most iconic landmarks and the second most photographed clock in the World after Big Ben. The clock was built in 1899 by the J.B Joyceto to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee of 1897. It is accessible from Eastgate Street by staircases either side of the road next to the arch.
