The Dammer Bergsee is a unique feature of the Dammer Hills landscape. The lake was artificially created. Iron ore was mined approximately one kilometer away between 1939 and 1967. In order to recycle the sludge produced during the processing of the iron ore, a drainless reservoir was created in 1953 as a treatment pond, today's Dammer Bergsee. As recently as the 1970s, the landscape resembled an abandoned open-cast mine more than a natural paradise. Nature has since reclaimed the area. The Dammer Bergsee has been a nature reserve since 1995. It has become a popular local recreation area for walkers, athletes, and hikers. The Damme Sculpture Trail is a truly special place, popular not only in Damme but also beyond the city limits. Groups of visitors from outside the area are often found here, guided through the trail by Franz-Josef Nordhoff, the spiritual father of the sculpture exhibition. During the numerous guided tours, visitors learn the story behind the sculptures and discover some of the city's earlier history in a playful way. This is particularly interesting for children, as they don't have to go to a dusty museum; instead, they can learn about the history of the city of Damme while walking or playing.

It's very rare that art can be experienced hands-on and without paying an entrance fee. The Sculpture Trail in Damme has made this possible, as there's no admission fee, and the sculptures can be viewed at any time. Regular guided tours are offered, where visitors can learn a lot about their history. The season doesn't matter, as the Sculpture Trail in Damme is open to visitors year-round.
