Traces of the first jetty at the port of Saint-Denis date back to the 12th century, used for transporting Chassiron wine to La Rochelle. Official documents appear in the 17th century, including taxes intended to finance the port's renovation. In the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous works on jetty, dikes, and repairs to combat silting were carried out regularly. Constant silting was the main problem—despite successive works, the port continued to silt up, which hampered its functionality. At the beginning of the 19th century, the idea of a protected port was abandoned and the breakwater was destroyed. Between the 1920s and 1930s, the port was gradually abandoned due to silting, lack of traffic, and also changes in transportation modes (railways, etc.). With the rise of tourism in the mid-late 20th century, the rehabilitation project was put back on the agenda. The new marina was inaugurated on July 23, 1989. It offers several hundred moorings (approximately 700-750 depending on the source) and replaces the old port, which was unusable due to the sand. In 2006, a commercial area and service infrastructure (restaurants, shops, bicycle rentals, etc.) were added around the port to make it more attractive to boaters and visitors.

As you head towards the port, AIDA signs line Port Avenue. In keeping with the association's objectives, AIDA wanted to create a link between the port and the village center and highlight the town's "remarkable points." To date, the thirty or so signs installed allow for a circular stroll through the village. If you would like to view all the signs, click on the link https://aida17650.fr/panneaux-patrimoine/

This path, which runs along the sea between La Bree-les-Bains and Saint-Denis, has the advantage of being dotted on one side with century-old pine trees whose height is dizzying, and on the other with dunes with beaches not only for swimming but also for the life of the animal species that inhabit them, whose survival depends on our attitude. The shade provided by the trees and the sea spray make it a very pleasant walk in hot weather.

In the heart of the coastal village of La Brée-les-Bains, on the island of Oléron, stands a beautiful, unusual little church adorned with a remarkable bell tower: the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. This mid-20th-century building was built on the ruins of an old wine storehouse and its courtyard, bequeathed by a parishioner to the local diocese for use as a church. The inhabitants of this small seaside village are proud of it, and with good reason! It was they, or rather their parents, who, with the help of volunteers and financial donations, were behind the construction of this building in just a few years (1958) using shale from the Estran, sourced from the area known as "le rocher de fer," giving it a beautiful ochre color. This elegant building, with its round tile roof, is today a symbol of Oléron's identity. Its belfry, housing a bell, a clock, and a beautiful wrought iron cross, is a striking feature. Inside the church, a cozy atmosphere prevails, largely induced by the subdued light filtering through the stained-glass windows. These depict local saints (Saint Anthony, Saint Eutropius, etc.) and biblical scenes. The nave is very original because it has no pillars. Large concrete beams cross the building and rest on the exterior walls, optimizing the interior space. A simple decoration and a beautiful wooden frame complete the church. The church underwent several internal additions or modifications after its construction: • Replacement of the original altar with a new altar after the liturgy "facing the faithful." • Stained glass windows: a large stained glass window depicting the Apocalypse, created by Van Guy de Tour in 1965, donated by James and Marguerite Allen. • Other stained glass windows: created by Félix Bazin, Nantes, depicting various saints, baptisms, etc. • The model ship "Le Sphinx", donated and blessed in 1960. • In 1978, the current bell "La Brénaise Marie-Madeleine" (105 kg), from the Paccard firm, was christened. • Various works: new pews in 1983, modifications to the ventilation/skylights, improvements to the floor, gallery, painting, etc. Until 1980, the church housed an ex-voto of the "Sphinx," a model ship dear to the villagers, which was unfortunately stolen.
