Remains of a Romanesque chapel were found at the site of the church. This is indicated by the remains of a Gothic window on the south side. Chancellor Marcus von Gerstenbergk had the church rebuilt in 1592. A late Gothic east choir was created. Dr. Johann Sebastian Beer, President of the Altenburg Consistory Council, commissioned additions at his own expense between 1653 and 1656. The late Gothic tower with an octagonal upper story was built on the west side. Above it rises the dome. The consecration took place on September 28, 1656. On the south side of the nave is an annex that served as the royal lodge. The ruins of Lobdeburg Castle are among the most impressive and best-preserved Romanesque secular buildings in Thuringia. They are also among the most important cultural monuments in the territory of the independent city of Jena and represent an important local recreation destination for the people of the surrounding area.

The Bunter sandstone of the Rabenschüssel belongs geologically to the Lower Triassic. It is a brownish-red, very fine-grained, and solid rock. The walls are consistently vertical and feature numerous overhangs. The rock is generally stable, but occasionally people hold the holds until they reach the ground. The existing rings were intended primarily for top rope climbing. The area was developed before 1914, but at that time, the difficult sections were climbed from above with rope assistance.
