On July 19, 1944, a dogfight took place over the Rotter Forest between a German "Focke-Wulf 190 A8" fighter plane and an American P-38 "Lightning" interceptor. The German came from Jagdgeschwader 300, stationed in Holzkirchen. Eventually both machines crashed. The German pilot, Sergeant Georg Reppel, was killed.
