The parish church in Lieser was dedicated to Saint Peter. Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when he – together with his brother Andrew – was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men." According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two-millennia-long line of popes – currently Francis – follows him. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted holding two keys; this attribute refers to the biblical passage in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19). Peter, along with Paul, is also known as the "Prince of the Apostles"; their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter in Lieser, a wine-growing village on the Middle Moselle, is a cross-vaulted hall building dating from 1782. The south-facing, unplastered tower was rebuilt by 1861 after a devastating fire on May 25, 1860, which also melted the valuable old bells.[1] The church is built on a rocky outcrop and towers over the lower village. The location at the Hambuchhütte near Lieser will be marked with a stele provided by the German Wine and Wine Association (DWI). "The 'Most Beautiful Vineyard View' award is given to vantage points that offer impressive views of Germany's wine-growing landscapes and are also easily accessible by hikers or bikers."
