The Jizō Bosatsu funeral cult is intended to help elders overcome their grief over the loss of children who died young. Until the modernization of Japan in the late 19th century, women were forbidden from entering Koyasan. Though women were banned from entry, seven halls were built at each of the entrances to Koyasan for the female pilgrims to pray. Today only one of these halls still remains, which can be found near the Fudozaka Slope.

A walk through this cemetery is both impressive and touching.

Nara Park is home to approximately 1,200 trusting sika deer, considered messengers of a deity and protected as living national treasures. The deer are so greedy for the biscuits (200 yen) that they even spurn grass. The male deer no longer have antlers... which is a good thing, because otherwise several tourists would be injured.
