Liberation Square in St. Helier was officially opened as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations in 1995. The main building adjacent to the square, built in 1901 as part of St. Helier's railway station, served as the German Port Authority during the occupation. From a first-floor window of this building, the first two Allied soldiers to arrive in Jersey, Surgeon-Lieutenant Ronald McDonald and Sub-Lieutenant David Milln, hoisted the Union Flag onto the roof. Shortly thereafter, the flag was taken by Jersey's Harbourmaster, Captain Harry Richmond, to the neighboring Pomme D'Or Hotel, where, with the assistance of Colonel Robinson, it was hoisted up the flagpole on the balcony. It is a nice walk down to the cave, however it is hardly recognizable as a cave from this angle. If you continue along the path you get a better view.
