The observation tower offers impressive views over the Beeder Biotope – part of the magnificent UNESCO Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve. With a bit of luck, you might spot water buffalo and even white storks building their nests. Did you know? The Bliesgau is also home to about 80% of Saarland's population of the endangered little owl. Beavers have also been reintroduced to the Blies floodplain since 1999. At least eight nationally endangered orchid species also occur in the semi-arid grasslands of the area, usually in large populations. The Bliesgau is the only region in Saarland home to all of the butterfly species currently identified in the Saarland under the Habitats Directive (FFH) (Dark Blue, Thyme Blue, Large Copper, and Golden Fritillary).
