Kamenz

Starting in 1822, Bönisch began to realize his dream of building a hospital for the poor in Kamenz. After the laying of the foundation stone on September 10, 1824, and over a year of construction, the Mercy Foundation was opened on January 3, 1826, and, in keeping with its new name, the inscription "Be merciful" (an i was spelled as a y at the time) above the entrance called for mercy. It was the fourth hospital in Saxony. In 1827 and 1828, the Mercy Foundation was expanded to accommodate even more people. The meadow and the so-called Stiftspark above the hospital were also part of the complex. After Bönisch's death, the building continued to be used as a hospital in Kamenz until it was abandoned as such in 2001. Compared to other marketplaces in Germany, Kamenz's market square is one of the smaller ones. Nevertheless, it was very lively, especially in the past. The so-called Autumn Wool Market was held here as early as 1455, and was supplemented by the Spring Wool Market in 1498. The Keulenmarkt (Beef Market) has remained in Kamenz to this day and is now held as a weekly market every Thursday. To the west of the city, the Hutberg rises about 100 meters above the old town, 294 meters above sea level. The name of the mountain is not derived from the hat, but from the herding of sheep. The Bismarck Stone was erected on April 1, 1895, the 80th birthday of the former Chancellor and Foreign Minister. Bismarck played a key role in the unification of the German Empire and was more or less well-respected by the population. When he was dismissed by German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1890, the German population was upset. On April 1, 1895, over 100 cities declared Bismarck an honorary citizen and erected a monument. This was also the case in Kamenz. Unfortunately, the bronze medallion attached to the monument was destroyed within the first month. The King Albert Stone was erected on the Hutberg on September 2, 1896. The stone stands on the former property of Wilhelm Weiße, who gladly made the site available for the memorial. The 40-meter-high tower is visible from afar and dominates the city's skyline. Yet one thing is clear: the secular building is not intended to overshadow the sacred main church. Amidst the red of the town hall, the golden clock immediately catches the eye. Likewise, the decorative coat of arms of the city of Kamenz, in the form of a relief coat of arms beneath the clock. Directly above the entrance is a counter commemorating the city's 800th anniversary. Starting at 800 on August 22, 2022, it counted backward 800 days to the beginning of the anniversary year on January 1, 2025, and has been counting upwards ever since.
