Yes, the boardwalks on Amrum are unique, with a great variety of paths through heathland, beach grass, fine white sand as dunes or beach, and the sea with its ebb and flow, of course. I think we walked through all the boardwalks after about a week, some of them twice. If you're just coming here for a day trip, you should take the dune hike near the lighthouse or walk along the boardwalk to the lighthouse in Norddorf, and then to the beach.

Boardwalks and stairs lead to the viewing dune in Wittdün. The view is magnificent and helps you appreciate the vastness and size of the Kniepsand.

The Kniephake is a bird sanctuary and cannot be entered

This beautiful, unique freshwater biotope lies in the heart of the Amrum dunes. It was created by the natural growth of a dune embankment. This was then artificially extended, gradually filling it with rainwater and rising groundwater. The lake and its surrounding area are an important resting and breeding ground for countless water birds.

The freshwater lake is located between Knipsand and the dunes near the upper walkway in Wittdün. A boardwalk leads from the end of the walkway to the lake. Information boards provide information about the flora and fauna and there are several places to sit that invite you to observe or eat. Especially in early spring you can see resting seabirds and shore birds here.
