The Gateway Trail System is an extensive 30 mile+ network of hiking, running, horseback riding, and mountain biking trails on the west side of the town of Mount Shasta. From these trails you get fantastic views of Mount Shasta and Mount Eddy.

The Mount Shasta City Park is a small, attractive urban park in the town of Mount Shasta. There are walking trails, benches, and Big Springs, the headwaters of the Sacramento River that flow through the park. This is a great place to spend the afternoon exploring or to tack on to the nearby Spring Hill if you're looking to add a few extra miles to your hike.

Sentinel Cave connects all the way through from the upper entrance to a lower entrance. The main path through the cave is among the least challenging in the Lava Beds National Monument. Check in with rangers at the Visitor Center for a free permit before entering any of the caves in the park, and always follow their rules for caving safely and softly.

Hercules Leg Cave is one of the most challenging excursions in the park. Experienced cavers can travel through passages under 2.5 feet high to connect to an exit at Juniper Cave. Sunshine Cave is a moderately challenging cave to explore, with rough paths and low ceilings. The cave gets its name from two collapsed roof sections that let in sunlight. Travel with a light anyway, that sunshine doesn't reach all the dark corners! This trailhead is the closest and most popular location to start a climb on Mount Shasta. You can take a short stroll, too, but if you are ambitious enough to summit the mountain or hike above 10,000 feet, you will need to obtain a summit pass. Otherwise you will need a Wilderness permit to enter the Mount Shasta area.

The PCT crosses the paved road at Gumboot Trailhead. There are some parking spots and Gumboot Lake is visible from above if you hike along the PCT for just a few minutes.
