A remarkable natural spectacle, accessible via an easy hike, partly along wooden plank paths. Direct access is prohibited.

The Akaka Falls are worth seeing even when it rains.

Hikers are sometimes surprised to see the trail ends at the top of 800-foot Waipo'o Falls, as opposed to approaching it head-on for the best views. It's still a breathtaking view, though. Take care if you try to get near the edge, as that's quite a drop. Coming early increases your odds of having clear skies, and (somewhat) avoiding the crowds on this popular trail.

The steep, short road down to Waipio valley itself is (February 2024) only open to Hawaiʻi residents with ID and driving 4WD. No hikers or cyclists permitted.

Akaka Falls State Park is located on the northeastern Hilo Coast and features two magnificent waterfalls. The 0.6 km long, gently ascending hiking trail takes you through a lush rainforest with wild orchids, bamboo groves and hanging ferns. If you continue following the paved footpath, you will first come across the 30 m high Kahuna Falls. Behind the next bend in the circular route you can already see the towering Akaka Falls, which plunge over 135 m into a gorge. The beautiful waterfall is probably the most famous of its kind on Hawaii Island. The pleasant hike takes less than an hour. https://www.gohawaii.com/de/islands/hawaii-big-island/regions/hilo/akaka-falls-state-park

This majestic waterfall cascades down a sheer lava rock wall for 400 feet, creating a boulder-strewn pool at its base. It is one of the tallest waterfalls on Maui and boasts breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. You will be greeted with mist, wind, and a vast jungle rock face that will leave a lasting impression. While you may be tempted to take a dip in the pool below, it's important to note that getting too close to the waterfall can be dangerous due to the risk of falling rocks from its 400-foot drop.

The Waipio Valley Lookout is a 300-foot walk from the parking area here and a fantastic view point at the end of the Hāmākua Heritage Corridor drive. The Hāmākua coasline is not only beautiful but sacred. The Waipiʻo Valley was the home of King Kamehameha I, when he was young. Kamehameha I was the first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi and this area is marked as an important center for political, cultural, and religious life on the Big Island.
