If you cross the old Jeetzel River, you'll get to the other side. It's okay to walk, but I'd prefer to drive a bit further, where you can easily cross over a road bridge.

Currently (07/2025) the ferry is out of service, an alternative ferry is in Bleckede.

I grew up in Hitzacker and in my time up until 1969, the old town hall was in the old half-timbered building to the left of the ice cream parlor on the market square. The post office was downstairs and the town administration was upstairs. I always had to pay the annual dog tax there. But then in 1973 I moved from Hitzacker to the wide world for work - it's possible that the town administration had to move due to lack of space.

The crossing with a bicycle now costs €3.50 in June 2024, but that's still reasonable. The ferry runs back and forth constantly during the day. 9 p.m. seems to be the last stop.

Here the ferry goes across to the other side of the Elbe. It is always busy and there is also a fish stall here.

The Schwedenschanze on the Höhbeck is a historical fortification that got its name from its use by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. The observation tower offers you a fantastic all-round view of the southern section of the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve. From the platform you can see the impressive Elbe, which winds through the landscape. The riparian forests, wet meadows and sand banks that surround Europe's fourth largest river are a habitat for numerous bird species, insects and the Elbe beaver.
