Wilhelm Kreis designed the 21-meter-high round tower, which was heavily influenced in many details by the tomb of the Gothic king Theodoric in Ravenna. A few years later, Wilhelm Kreis planned a similar, even more voluminous Bismarck Tower for Stettin (now Poland).

The Carolinenturm on the Kötsch is a very popular destination. It is one of the three towers of the Thuringian Three Towers hiking trail and also a stamping point for Touringen (No. 345). From here you have a great view and perspective. The rest areas and benches around the Carolinenturm invite you to linger. Absolutely worth it!👍

Nice place for a rest. And numerous trails in the area and around Jena.

In December 1846 the railway reached Weimar as the second construction phase of the Thuringian Railway coming from Halle (Saale). In the following years, the extensions towards Eisenach and Bebra went into operation. This was preceded by a state treaty, among other things. between the then Kingdom of Prussia and the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. Today's neoclassical reception building was built between 1914 and 1922 (with a long interruption in construction during the First World War). Since December 2015, Weimar has been primarily a regional train station. The high-speed line, which opened in 2015, runs past Weimar to the north and west.

The tower is currently closed and is rapidly falling into disrepair.

I liked it. At least 6 platforms. With shelters. Ideal for starting and ending hikes.

The Bismarck Tower at the height of the “Tatzend” or Malakoff at 329 meters above sea level is a mighty and impressive circular building. It is a popular excursion destination, and not just for the residents of Jena. The “Schlauer Ux” hiking and educational trail, which also leads past the Bismarck Tower, is very popular with families with children. The tower on the forest is one of eleven individually designed towers by the architect Wilhelm Kreis from Düsseldorf. Wilhelm Kreis designed a 21 m high round tower for the building in Jena. He obviously based his work heavily on the tomb of the Gothic King Theodoric in Ravenna. The observation tower has a fire bowl, which was fueled with wood and tar, and 18 surrounding angular columns. The foundation stone for the facility was laid on May 10, 1906.
