It was built between 1497 and 1502 in the Principality of Catalonia by the Catalan King Ferdinand II of Aragon. The fortress guarded the Catalan side of the border with France. France conquered this fortress in 1642. After the Treaty of the Pyrenees, the fortress became part of France.

great place for a picnic, parking close by but no toilets.

The path is in poor condition (large stones, etc.) and not pleasant, even on gravel with 40mm tires. Walking along the railway line is not pleasant either. This path seems abandoned.

Be careful, there is a section of road which is very dangerous with lots of traffic 15 km and no cycle path.....!!!!

The track is a little rough but ok for MTB’s & Gravel. From Port-la-Novelle, about 200M after leaving the road there’s a track to the left. This leads to viewpoint La Rouet and seems very popular with people. Of course most of them are in cars! Definitely worth a detour if you out around La Palme and/or Port-la-Novelle. There are 100’s of flamingos 🦩

Only recommended with an MTB / Gravel. Rough track, flat and not technical but large stones etc. Not advisable after rain, see my photo. I turned back, fed up with cleaning the bike this year. Probably nice though if the track is dry and you can look at the views.

At the Cap Leucate lighthouse (Phare du Cap Leucate) you can take a lovely walk with a view of the sea.

ATTENTION: Check the weather/tides, large parts of this way were under water when we arrived and no sign whatsoever.

Know that you can swim, the water is 15 degrees all year round out of season, tap your foot before going in, you will see that there is life hiding in the holes in the stones
