The large information panel in front of the castle marks the start of the historical trail. The first image is a reconstruction of the castle as it was built in 1482. A moat with a drawbridge and a surrounding wall (still standing today) with corner towers enclosed the inner courtyard with its buildings and a residential tower.

Built in the 14th century as the southeast corner tower of the medieval fortifications. From the 16th to the 19th century it served as a prison, named after the block in which the prisoners were held.

The block tower in Nürtingen was built between 1430 and 1435 from Nürtingen Rhaetian sandstone. It consists of a tower and a battlement. The battlement also connects the two city walls and their battlements, which adjoin the block tower. The tower wall has an outer circumference of approx. 23 m and an inner circumference of 12.86 m. The diameter of the tower is 7.34 m, its height 16.90 m. On the ground floor there is an inaccessible dungeon with a dome vault. Above it are two round tower rooms, the one on the first floor has a vault. Above the tower rooms is an octagonal attic with an eight-sided tent roof. Nowadays the block tower is accessed via an entrance staircase. From the first to the second floor you can get to the second floor via a battlement supported by stone arches. It has a total of five doors and five windows. The windows probably date from the 20th century, three of the doors are much older. The tower was first referred to in the town register of 1568 as a Fachturm, later as Bodenturm, and was the southeast corner tower of the defensive wall. In the late Middle Ages it was used as a prison. From around 1920 to 1950 it served as emergency accommodation. Today the Blockturm is part of the historical city tour, and can only be visited as part of this tour. The stone defensive towers in the city fortifications all served to strengthen security by making it easier to spot enemies and defend the city. Since the Blockturm was located at the southeast corner of the city wall, it had a particularly important position. When the Blockturm was built between 1430 and 1435, cannons, crossbows, spears, halberds and, rarely, short swords were used in battle. The most important protective measure was the stone walls, which were around 1.60 meters thick and protected it from enemy attacks; its round construction was considered particularly stable. The tower has arquebus loopholes. In the south of the second floor, a special form of loophole can be seen in the block tower - the key loophole. It was used for defense with a handgun. A circular opening for shooting is complemented by a vertical viewing slit. This is why this type of loophole looks like an upside-down keyhole. In the late Middle Ages, the block tower served as a prison, which is where today's block tower gets its name from. ...... Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockturm

The Block Tower in Nürtingen is the remainder of the medieval city fortifications. The name refers to the prison it once housed: people used to be put in the "block" as a punishment. The Block Tower secured the southeast corner of the city wall, which was first mentioned in 1354. The dark dungeon with only one opening in the ceiling is still preserved today. The Block Tower can be visited in conjunction with a city tour.
