Apart from two stone walls, not much remains of the ruins

The Hohenstein Castle ruins are relatively easy to see through the trees, especially in winter, if you know where they once stood. A narrow path leads up the hill. An entrance wall of the ruins, directly adjacent to one of the three moats, as well as a section of the northwest corner, are still visible. In this corner section, bulged ashlar stones are clearly visible. These stones were used primarily during the Hohenstein period. The castle was built before 1100 by the noble Lords of Urslingen and attacked and destroyed by the Imperial City of Rottweil as early as 1312. This was because the Lords of Zimmern, who had owned the castle since the 12th century, sided with the Württembergers in the Imperial War. After several changes of ownership, the ruins, along with the nearby farm and palace, are now owned by the Counts of Bissingen-Nippenburg.

There is not much to see of the former castle. The numerous information boards give you a good insight into the history of Hohenberg Castle. Benches with a great view invite you to linger

Zimmern unter der Burg is a municipality in the Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg (Germany). The municipal area belongs to the Oberes Schlichemtal recreation area. The place was mentioned around 1275 as Zimbern (timbered building). Later also Zerbrochen Zimmern or Brochenzimmern and Zimmern im Löchlin. Since around 1600, mainly rooms “under the castle” coat of arms Blazon: Shield divided with three central rising peaks of silver (white) and red. Around 1930, the community included a naturalistic representation of a castle standing on a high rock in a shield-shaped frame in its official seal. Although the Stuttgart Archives Directorate suggested colors for this coat of arms on November 27, 1933, it was not awarded. After the Second World War, the community took over the family coat of arms of the extinct Counts of Sulz, under whose rule it had been in the Middle Ages. The coat of arms was awarded by the Württemberg-Hohenzollern Ministry of the Interior on June 8, 1949, and the flag by the district office on March 29, 1982. There is no sign indicating that the path goes up to the ruins! Not everyone knows the way, or the turnoff can easily be overlooked when chatting.
