Seeburg is dominated by the castle of the same name, visible from afar and rising majestically on a peninsula above the Süßer See (Sweet Lake). It is the western part of an ancient, very large refuge. Since the late 1990s, the castle has been divided into private ownership, changing hands several times. This has resulted in the castle remaining unrenovated, standing empty, and falling into disrepair. The Widow's Tower and the castle church, however, have been renovated and are owned by a fruit farm. They are used as a residence, for vacation apartments, as a registry office, and for concerts. The new orangery on the lake promenade represents a further step toward tourism. The architecturally sophisticated new building will allow year-round operation.

The Wettins are among the most important Saxon noble families and have played a significant role in shaping German and Polish history. Their ancestral castle on the Saale is only partially preserved and is now used primarily as a high school. Due to the fragmentation of the components, it is now divided into different sections, the center of which is the central courtyard. The picturesque castle elements can be found primarily in the east with the tower. The western castle courtyard also has distinctive features, creating an elongated castle ensemble along the edge of the slope above the Saale. From an architectural point of view, however, they are divided into four sections: the “lower castle” with the lower castle courtyard in the east, to the west the outer bailey of the lower castle, adjoining it and now called the “middle bailey” is the outer bailey of the upper castle and finally the upper castle itself. In the Middle Ages, the castle had two additional round keep, of which the upper castle was demolished around 1700 and the outer bailey of the lower castle was demolished around 1860. The old St. Peter's Chapel (lower bailey) was also removed in the 19th century. Wettin Castle was first mentioned - similar to other Saale castles (Rothenburg, Giebichenstein) - as owned by the Ottonian kings in 961. At that time the spelling was Vitin. ....
