ローター・マイン（Roter Main）は、マイン川の2つの源流のうち長い方の川で、バイロイトの街並みを大きく形作っています。この川の名前は、流域の粘土質の土壌に由来しています。特に雨の後には、赤みがかった粘土粒子が水に洗い流され、特徴的な赤褐色を帯びた色合いになります。水源は、バイロイトの約10キロ南、フランケンシュヴァイツ地方のリンデンハルター・フォレストにあります。全長約72〜73キロメートルで、ヴァイサー・マイン（Weiße Main）よりもかなり長いです。クルムバッハ（シュロス・シュタイネンハウゼン）近郊でヴァイサー・マインと合流し、本来のマイン川となります。

The cycle path between Hollfeld and Stechendorf is officially known as the Franconian Switzerland High Trail. The path follows the former railway line between Bayreuth and Hollfeld, which was closed in 1974. Thanks to the use of the old railway line, the route is largely flat and gently sloping. From Hollfeld, the path leads along the Wiesent Valley towards Stechendorf and on to Bayreuth. It is often also referred to as a leisure cycle path or a railway line path.

Bischofsgrün is, so to speak, the "heart" of the Fichtel Mountains – a state-recognized health resort nestled in the valley between the two highest peaks in Northern Bavaria, the Ochsenkopf (1024 m) and the Schneeberg (1051 m). Bischofsgrün is the ideal starting point for almost any outdoor activity: The modern Ochsenkopf North Cable Car takes you to the summit year-round. In summer, the Alpine Coaster (a year-round toboggan run), the climbing park, and downhill trails beckon. In winter, the town is a hotspot for downhill and cross-country skiing. The region boasts a vast network of hiking trails, including the famous Franconian Mountain Trail.

There used to be up to 150 sawmills along the streams in the Franconian Forest valleys. The sawmill at the blast furnace in the Steinach Valley ceased operation in 1980.
