A castle that already has modern facilities

Since 1990, Scharfenstein Castle has been managed by the Treuhand and has been owned by the town of Leinefelde-Worbis since 2002.

At the former inner-German border crossing at Duderstadt-Worbis, the Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld provides information about the history of the division of Germany and Europe from 1945 to 1990. The Grenzlandmuseum is a modern place of learning and invites you in a variety of ways to deal with recent history and to actively explore it in the exhibitions, on the Grenzlandweg with original GDR border facilities and in the educational institution.

You have an oppressive feeling

As already mentioned by many, the castle has lost its historical charm due to the structural changes. Due to the changed use, however, it remains open to the public. The same stone castle in the south (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Gleichenstein_(Th%C3%BCringen)) is now privately owned. It can only be visited on special days or after consultation with the owner. Alternatively, you can visit Bodenstein Castle (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Bodenstein) in the north near Worbis on Sundays and public holidays. Equally interesting is the Hanstein castle ruins on the border with Hesse (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Hanstein). An event area is currently being built on the area in front of the castle. From here you can make a detour to the west along the Dün to the Steinhagen chapel and the beautiful "Herrenberg" viewpoint. For e-bikes there is a charging station from the Eichsfeld factory on the castle terrace.
