          The view is quite nice. The castle building itself has been renovated and modernized in such a chic way that there is no flair worth mentioning. Otherwise, mainly whiskey is advertised there.
          Lots of hustle and bustle thanks to large parking lot.
          Not a hiking highlight for me.

                      As already mentioned by many, the castle has lost its historical charm due to the structural changes. Due to the changed use, however, it remains open to the public. The same stone castle in the south (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Gleichenstein_(Th%C3%BCringen)) is now privately owned. It can only be visited on special days or after consultation with the owner.
                      Alternatively, you can visit Bodenstein Castle (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Bodenstein) in the north near Worbis on Sundays and public holidays. Equally interesting is the Hanstein castle ruins on the border with Hesse (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Hanstein).

                      An event area is currently being built on the area in front of the castle.

                      From here you can make a detour to the west along the Dün to the Steinhagen chapel and the beautiful "Herrenberg" viewpoint.

                      For e-bikes there is a charging station from the Eichsfeld factory on the castle terrace.

                                  Actually a worthwhile goal, but only partially accessible due to the renovation and privatization. Pity! In a whiskey bar you would have expected different opening times. Whether the outdoor extension to an event location contributes to the attractiveness for hikers, we'll leave it open...

                                    The castle renovation has probably been completed since 2022, so everything is going well so far. The renovators also received awards. What we don't like at all is the concrete tower!! It doesn't fit in with the overall picture of Scharfenstein Castle. You would at least have to cover it with stones. Everything else has been renovated. 👍

                                              Scharfenstein Castle is a high medieval castle. It was first mentioned in documents in 1209. It has been restored a bit too much for my taste and has lost a lot of its castle charm.
