9月 21, 2023, Schiffshebewerk Lüneburg Scharnebeck
The Lüneburg ship lift in Scharnebeck works as a double lift. Both troughs of the ship lift work independently of each other and overcome a height difference of 38 m. Four guide towers are assigned to each trough. Through the trough-like openings in these towers, the opposing ups and downs of the trough and the counterweights can be seen. The weight of a water-filled trough with a usable length of 100 m, a width of 11.80 m and a water depth of 3.40 m, with or without a ship, is always 6000 t, since the ships displace as much water from the trough as they weigh themselves when entering and leaving the trough . In the area of the towers, the troughs rest on support frames. Each trough is held by 240 steel cables, each 54 millimeters thick. These are guided over cable pulleys on the top floor of the towers and connected to the support frame at one end of the cable and to the counterweights at the other end. They consist of 224 heavy concrete slabs, each weighing around 27.2 tonnes. Each trough is powered by 4 three-phase motors, each with 160 kW, which overcome a maximum lifting height of 38 m in approx. 3 minutes. The troughs can accommodate ships up to 100 m long, which is where the first problem begins. Modern cargo or tank ships are 110 m long and push convoys are 185 m long. The troughs with a usable length of 100 m are no longer sufficient for these ships.

Last or first lift on the Elbe Lateral Canal. Here you can see the difference in height class. Ingenious invention to enable shipping traffic on a large scale inland. Observation deck open 24 hours.

In the comments, the assessments of the navigability differ somewhat. The photos also show sections that run along the shore or lead down to the water. The path at the campsite is also very narrow and partly muddy. So my tip: If you follow the signs for the Elbe Cycle Path, you will be led onto a road about halfway above the water (can also be seen on many photos).

Canal path closed from the elevator, but only results in a small detour

The windmill in Artlenburg is a real eye-catcher and always a nice photo opportunity for me when I pass here on my bike tours. The mill is not far from the mouth of the Elbe Lateral Canal into the Elbe.

Always nice to see the Elbe landscape. But that also applies to other Elbe floodplains along the Elbe up to Hamburg.

Very nice historical mill and the landmark of Artlenburg. Carl Brügmann put the first mill into operation here in 1833. She became a victim of the flames due to the brakes running hot in a storm in 1889 and was soon rebuilt. The current octagonal Dutch windmill stands on a square raw brick base. It is still owned and operated by the Brügmann family. Since 1954 it has been working almost exclusively on electricity, since the windmill has finally had its day. Today the Artlenburger Mühlenverein takes care of the Dutch mill. Visits are possible on request from H. J. Brügmann on Tel. 04139-7043. www.lueneburger-heide.de/service/sehenswuerdigkeit/1176/artlenburg-windmuehle.html

Since the construction of the weir at Rönne - commissioning in 1960 - the effects of ebb and flow in the Elbe have ended here. While the water level below the weir still fluctuates on average about 2.20 meters with the tide, the much smaller water level fluctuations above the weir are only changed by the amount of the headwater inflow. At this point, the landscape of the Elbe is shaped by the technical structures on the opposite bank of Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the Krümmel nuclear power plant with its high-voltage lines, the green pipes of the pumped storage plant that lead up the slope of the Elbe also catch the eye. If there is an excess of electricity, water is pumped through these pipes into the basin above; In times of high load, electricity is generated by lowering the water masses. Corresponding pumps and turbines ensure that electricity is stored mechanically. From here, down the Elbe, the foreland of the dike expands, offering not only a floodplain for the water, but also a habitat for numerous plants and animals. Here rare and endangered plants such as B. the meadow elephant, the swan flower, the large meadow button, the yellow meadow rue and the felty butterbur can be found. The reeds and willow bushes along the banks of the Elbe are not only a beautiful sight but also serve numerous animals such as z. B. Tasmanian titmouse, reed bunting, nightingale, dragonflies and hornets as a habitat. More and more traces of the beaver feeding on pastures on the banks of the Elbe are also found more and more frequently. It spreads further and further from upstream. The wide open meadows are used by meadow breeders such as skylark and lapwing in summer and by numerous species of geese in winter. Due to this particular importance, the Elbe foreland and the Elbe were placed under protection as part of the European Natura 2000 protected area system. https://www.samtgemeinde-elbmarsch.de/agenda21/deichvorlanddtespe.html
