7月 6, 2024, Siebeneichen Cable Ferry

👍 I think it's great that the ferry is still operated on a voluntary basis (beginning of April - end of October; Sat/Sun/holidays 10am-6pm. A donation box for the crossing is available. Money is used to maintain the ferry. Today I had an informative crossing with the history of this ferry. Since the farmer didn't want a bridge on his land back then, but preferred a ferry, he got it🔝. If only it were all that easy these days.....😉

Located directly in the center of the village of Siebeneichen, on the spacious village green surrounded by a fieldstone wall and old linden trees, stands St. John's Church, dating from the 18th century. The church was built in 1751, replacing a dilapidated predecessor, according to plans by the Hanoverian architect Johann Paul Heumann. It is a simple, elongated hall church constructed of fieldstones. A weather vane in the shape of a fish adorns the church tower. The interior of the church has retained its original, unified furnishings from the time of its construction. The nave is divided by the wooden barrel vault in the central section and the surrounding gallery. At the eastern end of the north side of the long side is the pew for the patron saint of the church, the Lord of Wotersen Manor. The pulpit altar, featuring a copy of the painting "Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane," now in New York, is the work of Hermann Andreas Elleroth of Lübeck. ... www.kirche-ll.de/gemeinden/lauenburg/siebeneichen/geschichte.html

The St. Johannis Church from the 18th century is located in the middle of the village in Siebeneichen on the spacious meadow, surrounded by a stone wall and old linden trees. The St. John's Church was built in 1751 instead of a dilapidated previous building according to plans by the master builder Johann Paul Heumann from Hanover as a simple, elongated field stone hall building. A weather vane in the shape of a fish decorates the church tower. The interior of the church has retained its uniform furnishings from the time it was built to this day. The nave is structured by the wooden hollow vault in the middle part and the surrounding gallery. At the east end of the north long side is the box for the church patron, Lord von Gut Wotersen. The pulpit altar with a copy of the painting "Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane", which is located in New York today, was made by Hermann Andreas Elleroth from Lübeck. www.kirche-ll.de/gemeinden/lauenburg/siebeneichen/geschichte.html

I discovered the place by chance. Since I like castles, I was very satisfied and I took some pictures. Unfortunately, I couldn't spend a lot of time here. But the environment looks very nice.

The Hahnheide is a beautiful nature reserve of approximately 1,500 hectares near Trittau in the Stormarn Switzerland region. Here you'll find wonderful stands of old-growth pines, beeches, and spruces. The forest is dominated by the "Lange Otto" (Long Otto). From this observation tower, you have an impressive view over the Stormarn Switzerland region. The 27-meter-high tower stands atop the 99-meter-high "Großer Hahnheider Berg" (Great Hahnheide Hill). On a clear day, you can even spot the Hamburg TV tower in the distance. The Langer Otto has been a very attractive observation tower for decades – it was originally built in 1974 and rebuilt in 2001 to its current height of 27 meters. I've known it since the late 1970s and always enjoy coming back – the view is fantastic. Anyone who manages the very steep climb without any electronic assistance deserves real respect. 😉 www.tourismus-stormarn.de/de/naturerlebnis/aussichtsturm-langer-otto-6

The view is wonderful! Be sure to take binoculars with you, because you can e.g. clearly recognize the Heinrich Hertz radio tower and harbor cranes in Hamburg.

From here you have a beautiful view across the landscaped park to the rear of Wotersen Manor. The landscaped park is not open to the public, so you have to look over the castle wall to see it. Wotersen Manor was owned for almost three centuries by the noble Bernstorff family, who played a significant role in Hanoverian and Danish politics during the 18th century. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gut_Wotersen

Wotersen Manor or Castle? The terms "manor house" and "castle" differ historically less in their inhabitants than in their function. Etymologically, both "castle" and "palace" are rooted in defense. The term "castle" has taken on a broader meaning since the Renaissance. A manor house, on the other hand, is always the center of an estate, such as a knight's estate or—in Schleswig-Holstein—a noble estate. Both are legal terms, as they historically presuppose a legal status, namely the estate owner's membership in the locally organized knighthood, which was represented in the state parliament. In any case, a manor house was the center of an agricultural operation, an estate, or at least a farm with arable land, or a vineyard, forest estate, or fish farm. You can find more detailed information about the different terms here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_(Architektur)

A beautiful mansion! But the historical outbuildings are also in good condition! Why it is also called "castle" is a mystery to me, because a sovereign never lived / ruled here!
