5月 19, 2024, Charon Sculpture on the Elbe Dike
Here, one surprisingly encounters a modern sculpture that transports one's thoughts back to ancient times: In Greek mythology, there was Charon, the ferryman to the underworld. At burial, a coin was placed on each of the dead's eyes; this was Charon's reward for transporting the deceased safely. Why he, as the ferryman, is standing not on a barge, but on a four-wheeled cart, is perhaps a free interpretation by the artist...

The bridge offers a great view of the Elbe, Dömitz (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) and the still standing part of the Dömitz Elbbrücke on the southern bank of the Elbe near Kaltenhof (Lower Saxony). Especially in the morning, during a beautiful sunrise, you can often enjoy spectacular views here.

The Dömitzer Bridge is one of the most impressive bridge structures in Germany. Due to its proximity to Dömitz Fortress, it had to be erected from the start of construction in such a way that it could be defended militarily in the event of an enemy attack - the massive bridge house still bears witness to this today. During the Second World War, the river bridges and the swing bridge were destroyed by an air raid, leaving only the bridge arches on the flooded area. Since the Elbe marked the border during the division of Germany, the bridge was not rebuilt and fell into disrepair over time. Now it should finally wake up again: With EU funding amounting to millions, the bridge will be renovated and made accessible, and gastronomy at the bridge house will probably follow.

The Dömitz harbor is located on the Elde river, just before it flows into the Elbe. A pretty little harbor through which the Elbe cycle path also runs. The Dömitz harbor hotel with a panoramic café is located in a former warehouse building.

In 1994 artist Bernd Seiter created the sculpture Charon, a ferryman into the underworld, from iron, cast zinc and wood. The work of art is on the dike at the eastern exit of the town. (Source: Wikipedia)

Just a beautiful area. Very easy-to-use bike paths, friendly people and plenty of places to stop for a break make every bike excursion perfect.

Bernd Streiter's sculpture "Charon" stands directly on the Elbe Cycle Path, on the Elbe dike in Mödlich. I like to take a break here when I'm cycling along the Elbe Cycle Path (which happens quite often).

Great place a bit scary, but nice to relax and the bike path on the dike is just great 😊

The old Dömitz railway bridge near Kaltenhof is an interesting old building that I like to use as a photo motif. Unfortunately, only a part of it is still standing, which extends from the southern Elbe dyke to the Elbe bank. The bridge was destroyed by an air raid in World War II. Unfortunately, the part of the bridge that was still on the Dömitz side was blown up in GDR times (in the 1980s). Around the old bridge there is a beautiful meadow landscape with many small bracks and wide meadows. A haven for wildlife and birds!

The small town of Dömitz is located directly on the Elbe and has a very pretty old town, which in parts seems a bit "dead" because many of the pretty, old buildings are falling into disrepair and apparently are not being renovated. Unfortunately, there aren't many shops there anymore. I also think it's a shame that the old Karstadt department store from the 1920s is now empty. Also worth seeing are the Dömitz Fortress, which was built in the 16th century, the Dömitz harbor with the harbor hotel and the Klein Schmölen migrating dune. The area is great for cycling, and the Elbe cycle path also runs through Dömitz.

In addition to the B191, a cycle and footpath leads over the bridge, from which you have a beautiful view of the Elbe and the surrounding area, e.g. in the direction of Dömitz (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and / or in the direction of the ruins of the old Dömitz railway bridge, on the south bank of the Elbe, near Kaltenhof (Lower Saxony). There are still cycle paths (Elbe cycle path) on both sides of the Elbe, but the cycle path on the Lower Saxony side only leads a few kilometers to Langendorf, while there is a continuous cycle path on the Mecklenburg / Brandenburg side of the Elbe.

"Charaon was created as the first major free work of art. The exploration of the theme of "Plowman and Death" blossomed here somewhat beyond the scope of the text. In the context of the theme of death, this vision of the ferryman to the underworld emerged. He has no skull-like face, he is not frightening, but very serious and dignified. Priestly in his appearance, he rather takes away the fear of the crossing. One does not doubt or despair of him. Almost benevolently, he takes us away, inexorably following the laws of eternity. I think everything will be alright on his chariot; the sickle is meant only for the body, not for us." Bernd Streiter, 1994

The Dömitz bridge over the Elbe was a 986 meter long railway bridge over the Elbe and was one of the longest river bridges in Germany. The partially destroyed building is located near Dömitz and was part of the railway line from Wittenberge to Lüneburg. It was built between 1870 and 1873 as a double-track bridge and was damaged in an air raid on April 20, 1945. Because of the German-German border, it was not restored.
