The Kaiserweg (Emperor's Way) stretches for approximately 100 kilometers from Bad Harzburg via Walkenried and Nordhausen to Tilleda in the Kyffhäuser Mountains. It runs primarily along the mountain ridges – from the northern to the southern Harz Mountains. The trail is named after Emperor Henry IV, who fled from the Saxons at Harzburg Castle in 1074 and sought refuge in the monasteries of the southern Harz Mountains and in the small town of Tilleda. There are also additional trails, known as the "Paths of German Emperors and Kings of the Middle Ages in the Harz Mountains." Ilsenburg Abbey (St. Peter and Paul) is a former Benedictine abbey in the town of Ilsenburg. The monastery complex dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. The owner of the monastery church has been the city of Ilsenburg since 1974, which had the sacred building extensively restored.
