The first traces of settlement go back to the Old Stone Age. The area was populated almost continuously. The fertile soil made the area particularly interesting for settlers during the Neolithic, which can be proven by over 55 settlement remains from this epoch in the city and the surrounding area alone. There are Neolithic burial mounds on the prominent mountain peaks such as the Moorberg, the Bockshornschanze or the Brüggeberg, which line up on the side walls of the Bodetal like a chain. About two kilometers north-west of Quedlinburg, west of the deserted village of Marsleben, a circular moat of the Stichbandkeramik could be examined in 2005, which is not inferior to the circular moat of Goseck in terms of age, extent and shape. At the end of the 8th century, documentary information about towns and cities in the vicinity of Quedlinburg accumulated: Marsleben, Groß Orden, Ballersleben (all deserted), Ditfurt and Weddersleben. The Wipertikirche as a branch of the Hersfeld Abbey was probably founded around 835/863.
