古い地元の伝承によると、この教会はヴェンド人（バルト・スラブ人）の異教の礼拝寺院の跡地に建てられたとされています。そこは三つの頭を持つ神トリグラウに捧げられていました。約300世帯のヴェンド人がここに住み、その神を崇拝していたと言われています。教会は、重要な交通路や交易路（ノイブランデンブルク/グライフスヴァルト、シュチェチン、ベルリン方面）の歴史的な交差点に位置しています。

The town church of St. Jacobi in Prenzlau dates from the middle of the 13th century. Several additions were made up to the 16th century, including the north chapel and the southern vestibule. In 1757 the upper floor of the tower was rebuilt and given a baroque wooden spire.
