Visit the oldest olive tree in Crete, and perhaps the oldest in the world. It is said to be between 3,500 and 5,000 years old. Next to the tree, there is also a small museum where you can learn about olive cultivation. (Free admission.) As expected, there is a tavern there. Prices are reasonable. The owners are also happy to show you their orchard, where they have some unusual fruits, such as the Japanese medlar, which you can also sample.

The hiking trail is only open during the day, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you don't want to hike through the entire gorge, you can take the ferry to Agia Roumeli and hike up a few kilometers.
