In early summer 2009, an American team of archaeologists discovered stone tools on the western slopes of the Preveli Gorge. The oldest examples were dated to 130,000 years ago. No remains of the makers of these scraping and splitting tools were found, so it is impossible to determine their species (Neanderthal or early anatomically modern humans). Since Crete had no connection to the mainland at any relevant time, this discovery is a scientific sensation: the toolmakers must have reached the island by sea.

From August 21st to 22nd, 2010, a forest fire broke out in the ravine behind the beach, destroying a large part of the palm grove. Kaloust Paragamian, the local representative of the environmental organization WWF, stated that approximately 70 percent of the trees were still alive. However, he estimated that it would take 20 to 30 years for the trees to fully recover from the fire. Nevertheless, on April 1st, 2011, the Greek Ministry of the Environment reported that the palm trees had almost completely recovered and all of them had sprouted new growth.

Behind the beach, the Megalopotamos, a mountain stream also known as the Kourtaliotis, originating in the Kouroupa Mountains, forms the small pond or lake of Preveli (Λίμνη Πρέβελη Limni Preveli), which extends into the gorge behind it. As on Vai beach in eastern Crete, the Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti) forms a natural palm grove in this gorge.
