The monastery was probably founded around 1230 by the Counts of Arnstein, who also called themselves Counts of Lindow. In 1542 the Reformation was introduced and the monastery was converted into a Protestant convent for women. It was one of the richest monasteries in the Mark until 1638, when it was destroyed by imperial troops along with its valuable library and documents.

Schloss Meseberg ist ein Barockschloss in Brandenburg aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Bei der weiteren Ausgestaltung des Anwesens spielte die Familie Lessing eine gewichtige Rolle. 1945 wurde das Anwesen entschädigungslos enteignet. Die von der Roten Armee geplante Sprengung des Schlosses konnte durch den Bürgermeister Franz Rhode verhindert werden. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten waren im Schloss ein Lebensmittelgeschäft, ein Kindergarten, das Gemeindebüro und andere Einrichtungen untergebracht. Nach der Wende verfiel Schloss Meseberg – das nicht an die Eigentümer zurückgegeben wurde –, bis die Messerschmitt Stiftung das baufällige Anwesen 1995 ohne konkretes Nutzungskonzept erwarb. Mit dem Regierungsumzug zur Jahrtausendwende ergab sich der Bedarf nach einem neuen Bundesgästehaus bei Berlin statt des zuvor genutzten Bundesgästehauses auf dem Petersberg. Schloss, Garten und Park wurden von der Stiftung nach den Maßstäben der Denkmalpflege restauriert. Die Stiftung, die dafür rund 25 Mio. Euro aufwendete, überließ 2004 der Bundesregierung die Nutzung des Schlosses für zunächst 20 Jahre zum symbolischen Mietpreis von 1 Euro. Die Bundesregierung investierte weitere 13 Mio.
