In 1995, the federal government rented the castle for 20 years as a federal guest house and invested a further 13 million euros in security and communication technology and also paid for the ongoing maintenance costs. The handover to the then head of the Chancellery, Thomas de Maizière, took place on January 26, 2007. The first guest in the house was French President Jacques Chirac.
The castle belongs to the Messerschmidt Foundation. It is used by the federal government as a guest house.
The castle is open to visitors on the "open day".
