“Synagogue Square Memorial” Design: Kaiserslautern City Planning Department Year of Creation: 2002 Location: Fischerstrasse The memorial to the Jewish victims of National Socialism in Kaiserslautern was erected on the foundations of the synagogue that was blown up in 1938. A section of the wall fragment on Fischerstrasse, which towered into the sky for several days after the explosion, was recreated to scale. The names of the victims are inscribed on the inside of the sandstone fragments. The torso, which emphasizes the enormous dimensions of the former synagogue, is a key component of the new square design, which also makes the floor plan visible again. A virtual reconstruction provides an impression of the former splendor of the Jewish house of worship, built in the Moorish-Byzantine style and designed by Professor Ludwig Levy.
