The enchanting Meerfelder Maar lies in the middle of the largest Maar funnel in the Eifel. This maar is at least 30,000 years old and takes up about half the space of the maar funnel. The idyllic village of Meerfeld nestles against the steep southern slopes of the other half.

The Holzmaar is located in the Vulkaneifel in Rhineland-Palatinate almost halfway between Gillenfeld (2.5 km southwest) and Eckfeld. The maar has a size of approx. 6.8 ha with a diameter of 325 m and a depth of 21 m; it is located in a nature reserve and is almost entirely surrounded by forest.
