Directly at the train station in Gerolstein

Behind the old railway tracks on the route between Gerolstein and Kyllburg, a special atmosphere opens up - a feeling of adventure and nostalgia. The path follows the old railway line and leads through dense greenery, past disused railway stations and under ancient bridges that tell stories of journeys past. The sounds of the trains have long since disappeared and have made way for the hum of nature and the crunching of the tires on the gravel. A quiet, almost meditative journey that lets you feel the raw beauty of the Volcanic Eifel and brings the region's past to life.

The Maare-Mosel cycle path is a real highlight - especially with the impressive viaducts and the former railway tunnels, which bring a touch of adventure to the tour. The path leads through beautiful landscapes, and a short break at the rest area near Gillenfeld is ideal for recharging your batteries and enjoying nature. This stop is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view over the Eifel before continuing on. A highly recommended cycle path that combines nature and a piece of railway history!

In the beautiful Alfbach valley, about 1.5 km east of Mückeln, the vanished village of Schutzalf was located until the end of the 19th century. The former hamlet, consisting of three or four houses and a chapel with a brother's apartment, was located between the Sprinker Hof and the Sprinker Mühle, both of which were owned by the Augustinian monastery of Springiersbach, which was founded at the beginning of the 12th century. Schutzalf served as a place of pilgrimage at the time, and a fragment of the cross was kept in its chapel. The year 1545 is said to have been inscribed above the entrance to the chapel. According to oral tradition, the remains of the altar stones from the Schutzalf chapel can still be found on a meadow by the Alfbach. Schutzalf also included the former monastery pond, located 600 m west of it, which the local community of Mückeln transformed into a unique wetland biotope. For many years, to be precise since Schutzalf was abandoned after the death of the last resident in 1882, the stones in the meadow were the only thing that reminded people of the vanished place.

A nice opportunity to take a break, always great when there are enough options.

The milk ram served to make work easier for the carters who were supposed to bring the milk to the dairy. They drove up to the milk stand and then used a hook to pull the milk cans up by their handles. The milk cans were numbered so that the milk in the dairy could be clearly weighed and allocated. On the way back, the carters transported the skimmed milk for the animals in the cans and also butter once a week. I still remember that my parents had the pot number 268. This number was stamped on the milk cans.
