Unexpectedly… a small biotope 🌿 Just a few steps from the construction site of the South German natural gas pipeline – where excavators, pipes, and construction noise usually dominate – a small biotope suddenly appears. Like a green island in the middle of the workday. Trees, hedges, water, and a touch of tranquility create a striking contrast to the surrounding technology. For a moment, the construction site fades into the background, and nature quietly but firmly announces: I'm still here. 🌱 It's precisely this juxtaposition that makes the place so special – inconspicuous, unexpected, and somehow calming.

Although the Wolfsloch beech tree is dead, it remains an important part of the ecosystem. As deadwood, it provides habitat for fungi, lichens, mosses, and insects such as bees and wasps – and is therefore indispensable for the natural cycle of the forest. 🌳♻️

The South German Natural Gas Pipeline (SEL) is a roughly 250-kilometer-long pipeline that transports gas from the Hessian state border through Baden-Württemberg to Bavaria. Initially, it will ensure the supply of heat and electricity during the coal phase-out and connect modern gas-fired power plants. From the early 2030s, the SEL will be the first pipeline in Baden-Württemberg to be connected to the European and national hydrogen infrastructure and will transport hydrogen in the future. Construction of the section from Hüffenhardt via Helmstadt-Bargen, Neckarbischofsheim, Epfenbach, Meckesheim, Spechbach, Mauer, Wiesloch, and Leimen to Gaiberg is planned from August 2025 to approximately May 2026.

The Renaissance draw well is one of the town's landmarks. Only fragments of the Old Castle in Helmstadt, a former moated castle, are still visible. The castle was destroyed in 1694, and a farm was then built partly on the old foundations, the main building of which dates from 1757. Some of the farm buildings built around 1900 bear inscriptions or coats of arms that name the Lords of Berlichingen as the builders. In the middle of the courtyard is a Renaissance-style draw well reconstructed around 1900. It is the only monument from ancient times and its appearance allows us to conclude that the castle was probably richly furnished. The two front sides bear the coats of arms of the Lords of Dienheim, Venningen, the Schenken von Geyern, the Lords of Helmstadt, Seckendorff and Neiperg.
