Catch a unique view of the wide Treene valley and enjoy the peace and nature in this beautiful environment! The Treene habitat impresses with an impressive variety of animal and plant species. The Treene valley stretches over a length of around 50 kilometers and offers a varied landscape of forests, meadows and lakes. The area is home to numerous animal species, including rare bird species such as the black stork and the kingfisher. Otters, beavers and deer are also at home here. The diversity of the flora that unfolds in the various habitats is particularly impressive.

Sankelmarker Lake is a natural body of water from the last ice age, which is now fed by two streams and various springs on the banks and bottom. This constant supply of fresh water has ensured the excellent water quality of the relatively deep, clear lake in recent years. Ideal conditions for fishing at Sankelmarker Lake. Due to the extreme nutrient input from the surrounding agriculture, however, there is an increasingly explosive proliferation of phytoplankton in the summer months, which pollutes the water. It is then also not possible to swim at Sankelmarker Lake. The banks are largely covered with trees and very difficult to reach. There are jetties, but almost all of them belong to private property. A small tour takes you around Lake Sankelmark. Hiking tour "Water experience": The hiker is guided over 4.2 km for around 90 minutes, always directly on the water. Enjoy the special atmosphere of the lake and listen to the sound of the small waves. Seabirds can be observed with the observation telescope. The academy center is also worth a visit.

Here on the southern shore of the lake near the viewing platform is the only swimming area on Lake Sankelmarker.

Everything flows... The surface water of Lake Sankelmark flows via the Beek, the Treene, and then the Eider into the North Sea. But beneath the lake lies a layer of lignite sands containing large amounts of groundwater, from which 317-meter-deep wells extract drinking water for Schleswig-Holstein.
