Neumarkt's landmark, visible from afar, towers 150 meters above the city. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1283, but the complex is certainly much older. The castle area had fallen into disrepair since the beginning of the 17th century, and excavations and renovation work began in 1997 by the Wolfsteinfreunde Neumarkt association.

The Count Palatine Castle Neumarkt, also known as the Neumarkt Residence, forms the center of the castle district in the old town of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz (together with the Hofkirche and the Reitstadel) and today houses the district court of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz. It was built in its current form by Count Palatine Friedrich II in the mid-16th century. It is listed as a monument under file number D-3-73-147-45. The facility is also part of the ground monument with the file number D-3-6734-0087 and the description "archaeological findings from the Middle Ages and the early modern period in the area of the former castle and the Catholic court church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Neumarkt i.d. The Neumarkt Residence – as the Palatine Castle is also called – is located in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz in the center of the castle district in the old town. Today the building houses the district court.

the Velburg castle ruins are a very beautiful ruin with a great view, you can go up a few more steps to enjoy an even better view. There you will also find a board with altitude information and which village is where. The way up to the castle is easy to drive, definitely worth it
