Behind the castle, a 280-meter-wide and 550-meter-long castle garden was created with an orangery (completed in 1706), Concordia Church (1706; now the Geological Institute), Huguenot fountain, equestrian statue and the now-defunct Hedge Theatre. The first self-contained, baroque courtly building ensemble in Franconia was created here. (Wikipedia)

At the end of the axis of the castle park, you will of course find the castle. Renovation work is currently taking place. Nevertheless, it is an eye-catcher

Atzelsberg Castle boasts beautifully maintained grounds, and there's an inn with a lovely beer garden next door. It's located directly on the hiking trail and has a parking lot, making it a great starting point for hikes.

apostle linden "Thousand-year-old linden tree" Eight branches stretch out from the trunk of the linden tree. Part of it branches out, so that a total of twelve branches reach the outer ring of stones. The number twelve represents the twelve apostles, twelve hours, twelve months and twelve signs of the zodiac. According to mysticism, it is a so-called apostle linden tree, of which there are very few in Germany.

Nice little castle with an atmospheric garden to stroll through: on the left side, next to the statue, there is a passage down into the garden with rustic mossy stones and individual works of art as well as old trees and ferns.

The fortified church with its thick walls and pointed towers is really impressive. The reason for the establishment in the 15th century were previous raids by the Nuremberg troops. Effeltrich has the best preserved fortified church in Upper Franconia. In the immediate vicinity of the church is the mighty dancing linden tree with its sweeping canopy of leaves. Definitely worth seeing!

Today's renaissance building is the successor to an older system that dates back to the Middle Ages. The humpback cubes in the section of the tower that stands on even older masonry point to the 11th to 13th centuries. As early as the Hessberg era in 1509, there was a castle in Neuhaus protected by moats and ponds. In 1528 the late Gothic house chapel and the tower stood, the latter without the hood that was put on a hundred years later. Johann Philipp v. Crailsheim rebuilt the castle in 1612-1618. At that time there was a drawbridge on the entrance side. Neuhaus was considered a “permanent place” and also survived the Thirty Years' War. It not only provided safety for people and livestock, but also served as a prison. In 1796 the castle was sacked by the French. In 1832 it was uninhabitable. Baron Sigmund v. Crailsheim had it restored in 1902. The outer bailey was destroyed by arson in the same year. A forester's house was built in their place.

Well worth a visit in any case. Well maintained. With over 300 years of history. Rebuilt in its current form from 1705 after being destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. In 1961 the castle was bought by the city of Erlangen and extensively renovated. It was sold privately in 2004 to save money, but with the condition that it be opened to the public. The new owner completely renovated the castle and the complex by 2013.
