The Veste Oberhaus is really a top excursion destination. You can climb the observation tower and enjoy the 360 degree panorama, and of course you also have a great view of Passau and the old town from the walls of the fortress. The museum is open in the summer months. Of course, the beer garden with the great view is definitely a highlight in itself. There is also a youth hostel. The fortress is an architectural masterpiece with the details and the entire structure.

Attention ⚠️: Unfortunately, the ramparts and the Ludwigsteig trail are currently closed due to storm damage. The entire area is cordoned off, and the lower section of the Ludwigsteig is completely destroyed by a landslide. A detour is necessary to reach the castle from the rear. Signposts are in place. We were there again on June 24th. Unfortunately, there has been no change to the construction situation. Everything is still closed 😕

The Oberhaus Fortress towers gracefully and mysteriously above the city: When exploring Passau, your gaze always wanders up to the castle complex on the Georgsberg on the left bank of the Danube. The magnificent building has 800 years of eventful history behind it and is now a lively cultural site with a museum, castle festival and summer cinema. There is also the most beautiful view of Passau. 65,000 square meters of built-up area - the Veste Oberhaus is one of the largest and most powerful castle complexes in Europe. Founded in 1219 and expanded over the centuries, the Veste Oberhaus is an impressive European cultural monument. In 1932, the city of Passau took over the upper house and set up a museum. The museum is the heart of the Veste Oberhaus. But the castle complex can also be explored in other ways. Among other things, there is a multimedia tower here: an observation tower from the 18th century has been converted into a multimedia exhibition building. The history of the Inn-Salzach-Danube region is presented on several floors
