You have to earn the view, as it's more or less steep from every direction, but the sweat is worth it. Describing the many climbs would go beyond the scope of this article and depends on your preferences. My personal favorite is the one from Vorderburg, with its amazing switchbacks to Bitterlis and a viewing bench overlooking the Illertal valley.

The Mulzer pine, as it was formerly called after a pilot from the First World War, was struck by lightning in the 1980s. Because it was believed that the tree would not survive, a new one was planted next to it. The tree survived nonetheless and you can still see the marks on the bark.

Since December 2024, the inn has been run by "Just & Ela". The food is delicious, the service is good 🙂.

Mariaberg is the name of a mountain and the village located there in the St. Lorenz district of the city of Kempten (Allgäu). The town is located in the eastern part of the ridge of the same name. The highest elevation of the ridge is called Höhenegg, which, at 915 m above sea level, is also the highest elevation in the city of Kempten. The town's Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1783 on the orders of the Kempten prince abbot Honorius Roth von Schreckenstein. Until 1768, a chapel owned by Balthasar Weegmann from Guggers am Kniebos stood on the same spot. The chapel is regularly used by the Catholic parish of St. Lorenz for church services. In the Tyrolean War of Freedom, Vorarlberg troops allied with the Tyroleans marched over the Mariaberg to Kempten several times in 1809.
