Impressive Middle Ages at the Nördlinger Gate.

A moment of shock on August 9, 2023: Flames and a massive column of smoke emerge from one of the city's landmarks, the Nördlingen Gate Tower. The fire was presumably caused by a technical defect. The fire brigade quickly got the fire under control. However, rooms in the museum were destroyed.

The Nördlingen Gate, built around 1400, is adorned with a stepped gable from the 16th century with half-shells. Storks nest on the top of the gate tower.

Directly southwest of the Nördlinger Gate, an ancient, worn stone staircase leads up to the top of the wall and to the battlement directly above the gate, from which the entrance to the city was defended against enemies.

An orchard, like this one below the castle above Ellwangen, is a collection of fruit trees of different ages and varieties. The trees are spaced far enough apart that each tree has enough space and light to grow.

The church is worth a visit. It's really impressive

The three-winged complex dates from the 16th century, stairwell and gables from the 17th/18th. Century. Four corner towers were demolished in the 19th century. In 1662 the castle passed from the von Knöringen family to the Barons Hofer von Lobenstein. Because of their Protestant faith, this family had left their possessions around Lobenstein Castle in Zell. The Hofer part of the name is derived from the family seat Burg Hof am Regen. Various spooky stories are circulating about Wildenstein Castle.
