Impressive Middle Ages at the Nördlinger Gate.

A moment of shock on August 9, 2023: Flames and a massive column of smoke emerge from one of the city's landmarks, the Nördlingen Gate Tower. The fire was presumably caused by a technical defect. The fire brigade quickly got the fire under control. However, rooms in the museum were destroyed.

The Nördlingen Gate, built around 1400, is adorned with a stepped gable from the 16th century with half-shells. Storks nest on the top of the gate tower.

Directly southwest of the Nördlinger Gate, an ancient, worn stone staircase leads up to the top of the wall and to the battlement directly above the gate, from which the entrance to the city was defended against enemies.

A beautiful, airy square, surrounded by mansions with magnificent facades and the two imposing churches of St. Vitus and the Jesuit Church (now the Evangelical Parish Church) as well as impressive official buildings, forms the center of the large district town of Ellwangen.

On October 3, 1233, the collegiate church of St. Vitus, the landmark of the town of Ellwangen, was consecrated. The building, which dominates the town center, is already the third church on this site, built as a collegiate church for the nearby Ellwangen monastery. According to tradition, the monastery was founded by the Bishop of Langres, Hariolf, and his brother Erlolf in the Virngrund forest in 764. The three-aisled basilica with its three Romanesque towers is considered the most important Romanesque vaulted basilica in Swabia. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the interior was given a Baroque makeover. Nevertheless, the high medieval origins are still clearly recognizable. A Gothic cloister and the Chapel of Our Lady are directly adjacent to the main nave. In 1964, the church was elevated to a minor basilica. The direct connecting door to the neighboring Protestant town church can be seen as a special feature of ecumenism.
