The origins of today's church on the Kirchberg in Bad Oldesloe date back to 1150, when Bishop Vicelin consecrated the first stone church in Oldesloe and named it after the apostle Peter. The Vizelin Church was badly damaged in the war of Duke Erich V of Saxe-Lauenburg against Lübeck in 1415 and was rebuilt. In the years before 1537, the church burned down due to a lightning strike and could not be re-roofed until 1542.
