In a document from 1287, the church was first mentioned as St. Bartholomew's Church, along with its patron saint, Bartholomew. The nave, triumphal arch, and entrance portal are of Romanesque origin. The 385 m high Jenzig in the northeast of the city is one of the Seven Wonders of Jena and offers an impressive view over the Saale valley.

According to building finds, the village church already existed when the village was first mentioned in a document in 1252. The tall, narrow lancet window on the choir stalls and the cross vault in the choir date from this period.

This very beautiful view is on the hiking trail from Jenzig to Wogau. I really like being up there. There are lots of places to sit with views of almost all of Jena.
