A nice place, no matter which side of the canal, to watch how the pilot change takes place here.

Here boats from the NOK are locked into the Gieselau Canal, which connects the canal with the Eider.

The Gieselau Canal with a length of 2.8 kilometers connects the Untereider and Kiel Canal. It can be navigated by ships up to 65 meters in length, 9 meters in width and 2.70 m in draft.

It is very interesting to watch the pilots go by. With the red "pilot" boats the pilot is brought to the passing ships or picked up.

During a planned "pit stop" we could comfortably watch the ship traffic and strengthen our physical well-being for the further journey.

Nice place for a little rest. The physical well-being can be taken care of at the snack bar. The old chain ferry on land reveals its secret of the drive.

If you are lucky, there are children on board and the captain is in a good mood, it can even be done in a loop - in other words, 360 degrees of rotation before mooring on the other side :)

In 1936, the Gieselau Canal was built as a connection between the Kiel Canal (then known as the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal), which opened in 1895, and the Eider, which has always been used as a shipping route. It takes its name from the Gieselau stream, the lower reaches of which are now cut off by the canal construction. It still forms the actual border between Dithmarschen and the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The Gieselau Canal was built in conjunction with the construction of the Lexfähre and Nordfeld locks in the Lower Eider. The construction of the Kiel Canal not only cut off the Lower Eider from the Upper Eider above Rendsburg, but also lost important tributaries in the lower reaches. The lower river flow and stronger tidal effects led to severe silting and silting of the riverbed, which in turn led to constant, costly dredging. On the other hand, during floods, the water could no longer be distributed among the tributaries, which led to repeated floods and flood disasters. The construction of the locks and partial straightening of the Eider largely solved the problems of shipping and high floods. The construction of the Gieselau Canal saved the need to expand the Lower Eider between Bokelhop and Rendsburg and instead diverted shipping on the Eider to the Kiel Canal. As the Eider is kept at a much lower level than the canal due to the low-lying surrounding area, the short connecting canal has a lock that can be crossed with a portal bascule bridge. Today, the lock and its surroundings are mainly used for recreational boat traffic, favored by the lack of mooring options on the Kiel Canal. https://www.echt-dithmarschen.de/typisch-dithmarschen/sehenswuerdigkeiten/details/gieselaukanal-mit-klappbruecke/
