Once a place of pilgrimage - today it is an enchanted place

As so often over the centuries, only a ruin remains of the once imposing imperial castle (mentioned as such in documents in AD 1000). During the French occupation of the Rhineland, it suffered the typical fate: conquest and destruction.

A little rest at the keep of the Hammerstein ruins, enjoying the view and unpacking a picnic - that's hiking fun!

The monastery ruins of Tönisstein, also Sankt Antoniusstein monastery, are the ruins of a former Carmelite monastery in Bad Tönisstein, a residential area in the Kell district of the city of Andernach (Rhineland-Palatinate), which was founded in 1465. The monastery ruins are protected as a cultural monument.

Very beautiful moated castle on the Rhine cycle path, definitely worth a visit.

Neuwied Castle, built in 1653, fell victim to French soldiers as early as 1694. In its current form, it was built from 1703 according to plans by the architect Julius Ludwig Rothweil. Originally, it was to be built with three wings, based on Versailles, of course, but the result was the layout of three separate buildings. Most of the castle park is open to the public. The castle is the residence of the zu Wied family and the administration building. The castle grounds are not open to the public, but you can also see them very well from the outside.

The view is simply fantastic.
