Standing proudly on a limestone cliff above the River Wye, Chepstow Castle is a magnificent fortress with a history that stretches back nearly 1,000 years. Founded in 1067 by Earl William fitz Osbern, a close friend of William the Conqueror, the castle was one of the first Norman strongholds in Wales. These days, it is an interesting place to visit and affords some stunning views.

Wintour's Leap is a noted rock climbing location and viewpoint. It is located near the village of Woodcroft in Gloucestershire, on the English side of the Wye Valley, north of Chepstow. Wintour's Leap is named after Royalist Sir John Wintour who, hotly pursued on his horse by Parliamentary forces, according to local myth survived a leap off the cliff and, landing safely in the Wye below, swam to safety in the nearby Chepstow Castle. In fact, Wintour did escape from the Roundheads by using the river nearby on two separate occasions, but from less spectacular positions at Lancaut and Sedbury.

This is a long long climb as they go. Each individual ramp is easy but grouped together and with cars and you'll crying out for 3k worth of carbon. Problem is the surface is typical of Gloucestershire B Roads, i.e. not great for speed. kinda cheese gratery, You'll be climbing til you reach the path off to the Devil's Pulpit, and a little descent is followed by a kicker before the Brockweir junction

Wintours Leap is a noted rock climbing location and a great viewpoint. According to local legend, Sir John Wintour leapt off the cliff to escape pursuing Parliamentary forces, landed in the Wye below and swam to safety at nearby Chepstow Castle. More sensibly these days, the area is very popular for climbing with over 300, mostly multi-pitch routes, ranging from Mod to HVS right up to E6.
