Spielberg Castle belonged to the castle system of the Counts of Truhendingen in the 12th and 13th centuries. After their extinction, it came to the Counts of Oettingen in 1363 and later became the headquarters of the Oettingen-Spielberg line, which was ruled in 1734. The impressive, ring-shaped complex from around 1400 was rebuilt several times, most recently by the Steinacker family of artists, who took over Spielberg Castle in 1983 and built a museum for contemporary art.

The residential palace was built between 1679 and 1687 by the Württemberg master builder Mathias Weiß. Although the facade dates from the High Baroque period, it contains elements of the Italian Renaissance. The large hall with its magnificent Schmuzer stucco and the magnificently stuccoed reception rooms on the 2nd floor are particularly worth seeing. The Oettinger Residenz concerts take place in the hall from spring to autumn. Interested parties can also take part in the regular castle tours. The palace was built from 1679 to 1687 for the Oettingen-Spielberg line by Mathias Weiß from Kassel and decorated with magnificent stucco work by Mathias Schmuzer from Wessobrunn. The themed and special tours through the residence rooms and the castle museum are a special experience. The Residenzschloss is open from April to October Tuesday to Sunday between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. A visit is only possible as part of a guided tour; combined tours with the castle museum can also be booked.
